Beam me up

This monstrosity is a Raise Bore used for ventilation shafts in mines. I photographed it around 1983 at Roxby Downs.

First it drills a pilot hole down to the drive (the horizontal mining tunnel) then a large diameter drill bit is attached – the one I saw was about 2/3 meter across, if I remember correctly – and the Raise Bore does what its name implies – it starts rotating and then pulls UP to create the ventilation shaft. I was in the mine drive when it started back up. Noisy, yes. Impressive? Too right!
