The Home My Father Built

The Home My Father Built

We came from England to Melbourne in 1955 – by 1960 Dad had built this (weatherboard) house largely by himself. This is something you can’t do today – too many regulations.
The pic was taken in 1962, just after Dad made the front fence that you can see – he made it by drilling a series of holes in the top and bottom rails and fitting one-inch dowelling for the uprights!
As you can also see, the road had not yet been sealed by the Council.
My parents moved out of the house in the 1980’s and came to live in South Australia.

My wife, Kath, and I went back to see the house in 2006, and the great French windows in the Lounge that you can see have been replaced by a little window that would make the place far too dim for Dad – he liked light, and plenty of it. I’m glad he never saw what the present owners have done to the house – his proudest achievement!
